Medicare Part D Scams Guide: Spotting Scams for Seniors
How to Spot Medicare Part D Scams
1. Fake Plan Enrollment Calls
Red Flags:
- Unsolicited calls claiming to be from Medicare or a plan sponsor.
- Pressure to enroll immediately or pay fees to avoid penalties.
- Requests for Social Security numbers, Medicare numbers, or bank details.
How to Spot:
- Verify the caller: Dial Medicare’s official number (1-800-MEDICARE) or the plan sponsor’s number from the Medicare website.
- Check for urgency: Legitimate plans will not demand instant action.
- Avoid sharing info: Never provide personal details over the phone unless you initiated the call.
2. "Free Equipment" Offers
Red Flags:
- Promises of free hearing aids, blood pressure monitors, or other devices.
- Requests for upfront payments or personal information to "qualify."
- Claims that the equipment is "Medicare-approved" but requires additional fees.
How to Spot:
- Research the provider: Check if the company is licensed and has a physical address.
- Question the offer: Free equipment is rarely legitimate; scammers often use it to steal data.
- Consult Medicare: Call Medicare to confirm if the equipment is covered under Part D.
3. Card Skimming at Pharmacies
Red Flags:
- Fake machines at pharmacies that look like real ones.
- Unusual delays when swiping or tapping your card.
- Receipts that don’t match your transaction details.
How to Spot:
- Inspect the machine: Look for mismatched logos, damaged screens, or loose parts.
- Use contactless payment: If possible, pay with a card that has chip technology.
- Monitor your account: Check for unauthorized charges regularly.
What to Do If You’re Scammed
- Report the scam: Contact Medicare Fraud Hotline (1-800-MEDICARE) or the FTC at www.ftc.gov.
- Alert your bank: Notify your financial institution to block fraudulent transactions.
- Change passwords: Update passwords for Medicare accounts and other sensitive services.
- Inform family: Share the scam details with loved ones to prevent further victimization.
